International Summer Institute Begins Monday

Starting on Monday, June 30th, the College of Education will again host 25 public school teachers from the city of Madrid for a four week International Summer Teaching Institute.  This is the fourth consecutive summer in which Roosevelt University has hosted this program for Madrid teachers.

The Institute will be held in Room 700, the Center for Continuing Education, in the Gage Building at 18 South Michigan Ave.  The goals of the institute are to help English as a second language teachers improve their English language abilities and knowledge of instructional strategies in English, science, and technology.

Language Immersion is a special component of the Institute. After proficiency groups are organized, an ELL faculty member is paired with each group for the duration of the program.  In addition, the College of Education partners with WorldChicago to provide homestay accommodations for all teachers.  The intensive interactions with American families enhance the classroom learning, as do the frequent field trips and observations in area schools.

John MacDougall, Director of Grant Projects in the Office of Community Engagement, is the coordinator of this program.  It is just one of several outreach activities that are taking place at RU this summer under the direction of Dr. Teryl ann Rosch, Associate Dean for Community Engagement in the College of Education.
