John MacDougall Appointed Director of Assessment and Grants

I am pleased to announce that John MacDougall has been appointed Director of Assessment and Grants for the College of Education.  John replaces Lina Eskew, who resigned from the position in September in order to pursue a job opportunity with another organization.

John is a long-standing employee of Roosevelt University.  After completing coursework at the University of Chicago and a BS in Psychology at The Ohio State University, John returned to Chicago in the mid-1980s to enroll in Roosevelt University's MA program in Elementary Education. While a graduate assistant for Dean George Olson, he began working on grant projects. After student teaching and graduation in 1989, he remained at Roosevelt as part of the College of Education’s Office of Research and Development.  As part of his work for the COE, he managed a series of summer professional development workshops for high school and middle school teachers.

In 1993, the Office of Research and Development became the Chicago Education Alliance, under the direction of Teryl ann Rosch.  The Chicago Education Alliance (CEA) was comprised of many Chicago area universities and worked closely with the Chicago Public Schools to develop projects addressing important district needs.  Notable among its projects were a New Principal Support Program and a Principal Review Board.  In addition to serving as the CEA assistant and then associate director, John assisted in the writing of the first Chicago GEAR UP Alliance (CGUA) grants that were awarded to Chicago.

In 2010, the CEA became the Office of Community Engagement (OCE) and was integrated into the College of Education.  John served as Associate Director with responsibilities for the GEAR UP grant, but also the TRiO programs—Veterans Upward Bound, Upward Bound and Educational Talent Search—that were integrated into the OCE.  He also has played a critical role in the IBHE Balanced Literacy Grant that the COE has had since 2010, as well as the Summer Teaching Institute that the COE has offered to teachers from Madrid each summer since 2010.

John MacDougall is married with two children. His wife, Lisa Roberts, is a consultant in Museum Education and Environmental Education, with a doctorate from the University of Chicago. His daughter is a student at NYU and his son is currently a senior at Walter Payton College Prep. They live in West Rogers Park in Chicago. Although he does not play any instrument, music is a passion, as the posters on his new office--Gage 802E--attest.

Please join me in giving John a warm welcome to his new role in the College of Education!
