Not Too Early To Plan For Jumpstart

Jumpstart is a research-based, national early education program, that recruits and trains college students to serve preschool children in low-income neighborhoods.  Our proven curriculum helps children develop the language and literacy skills they need to be ready for kindergarten, setting them on a path to close the achievement gap before it is too late.  Funded by AmeriCorps, Roosevelt University students serve as mentors for 3 to 5-year-old children living in low-income communities, in two partner preschools. Early intervention techniques also help to eliminate negative behaviors or habits at early ages before they become deep rooted by high school age.

Jumpstart is partnered with Roosevelt University as well as five other major universities in the Chicago area:  DePaul, Northwestern, Dominican, Loyola, and University of Chicago.  As the table below reveals, through these partnerships, Jumpstart is able to cultivate relationships with more than 400 college students, called Corps members, who serve twice per week in preschool classrooms across Chicago. Students serve in classrooms two days per week, for two hours each session.  Each session revolves around a core storybook and one book serves as the focus for two sessions.  Session plans are organized in six unit themes -- Family, Friends, Wind and Water, The World of Color, Shadows and Reflections, and Things That Grow.
