Celebration in Memory of Vince Gambino

The College of Education is sad to report that Vincent Gambino passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 21 at the age of 82.  Vince completed his undergraduate education in psychology at Roosevelt University and his doctoral program in counselor education at Northern Illinois University.  He began his career in the Department of Counselor Education at Roosevelt in September 1964 and he served with distinction on the Roosevelt faculty until he retired in August 1999 at which time he was awarded emeritus status.

Vincent loved teaching and his good work in the classroom touched the lives of countless Roosevelt students.  Many former students remained in contact with him long after he retired, seeking out his expert counsel and good advice.  He was a trusted and highly respected colleague and friend to all who knew him.  A very successful clinical psychologist, he continued his full-time practice until his death. 

He is preceded in death by his life partner, Robert N. Anderson.  He is survived by his brother George, numerous nephews, and his many good friends.  A celebration of Vince’s life will be held at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 27 at The Oak Brook Drake at 2301 York Road, Oak Brook.   Memorials in his name may be made to an animal shelter of your choice.

Invitation To Participate in CAEP Accreditation Process

Roosevelt University's College of Education is hosting an accreditation visit by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) on April 9 – 11, 2017. Interested parties are invited to submit third-party comments to the visiting team. 

Please note that comments must address substantive matters related to the quality of professional education programs offered, and should specify the party's relationship to the College of Education (e.g., graduate, present or former faculty member, employer of graduates). Also, only initial teacher preparation programs (undergraduate and graduate programs in early childhood education, elementary education, music education, secondary eduction, and special education) are involved in the review.

Transcript of Franklin Honor Society Speech

On Friday, December 16, Christine Espindola, a senior in our Elementary Education Program, was the student speaker at the induction ceremony for the Franklin Honor Society.  The ceremony was held in Ganz Hall just prior to graduation. Approximately 100 people attended the ceremony, which recognizes Roosevelt undergraduates who completed their studies with a GPA of 3.7 or higher.

Christine's speech personifies the distinctive attributes that we seek to nurture in our Rooseveltian teacher candidates. To read the complete text of her speech, click here.

Seminar on Public Education in Elgin

This second installment of our Continuing Ed. series looks at how demographic shifts impact the content and quality of public education - asking if all students in schools with diverse student bodies are receiving the same education. 
Alejandro Portes (Princeton University) will be joined by Karla Jimenez (head of the Parent Leadership Institute at U-46) and a parent from the Elgin community in this interactive program, moderated by Kerry Lester (Daily Herald) and featuring music and poetry by Bartlett high-school students.
This event is free and open to the public. Registration is recommended.

It’s time to celebrate the holiday season!  Please join us at the following community-wide events on the Chicago and Schaumburg campuses:

Monday December 12 in Schaumburg:  11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Winter Potluck, sponsored by the Schaumburg WOW committee, President’s Office, and Campus Community.  

Wednesday December 14 in Chicago: 11:00 a.m.-1:00  p.m.  Winter Brunch, sponsored in part by the Dining Center.  The brunch will cost only $5.00 per person and is open to the entire RU community.

COE Student Selected To Speak At Franklin Honor Ceremony

Christine Espindola, a senior in our Elementary Education Program, has been selected to speak at the induction ceremony for the Franklin Honor Society on Friday, December 16 at 9:00 a.m. in Ganz Hall. 

The Franklin Honor Society was founded in 1956, on the 250th anniversary of Benjamin Franklin’s birth. In the words of its charter, the Society seeks to “emphasize scholarship, character, and ideals of the students of Roosevelt University, and by recognition of students through election to membership, to stimulate the open-minded search for truth, the appreciation of intellectual excellence, and to foster the democratic spirit which were outstanding qualities of Benjamin Franklin.” Inductees receive a certificate of membership and honor cords to wear with their graduation regalia. 

Christine is pursuing a degree in Elementary Education with an ESL Endorsement. One of Christine's professors, Erin Mackinney, writes: "I have had the privilege of having Christine in several ESL Endorsement courses. She is an intelligent, hardworking student who wants to teach underserved students such as English language learners. She is an advocate of educational programs which promote and preserve a student’s home language in addition to learning English. Christine believes the preservation of language should start early so that students grow up with the ability to speak, read, and write in two languages."

COE Faculty Making An Impact This Fall!

Here are just some of the many scholarly awards, recognitions, and accomplishments of our faculty this fall.


Alyson Lavigne, Associate Professor of Curriculum Studies, has been selected as one of a select group of 10 promising young scholars to participate in the 2017 Jacobs Foundation Conference on “Education in Times of Increasing Cultural and Linguistic Heterogeneity.” This conference will bring together international leaders in the field of education to engage in an interdisciplinary discussion. The conference aims at exploring the most relevant current and future research questions in the field of education pertaining to increasing cultural and linguistic heterogeneity. The goal is to engage in a different kind of intellectual enterprise: an interdisciplinary conference with a strong topical focus and thoroughly selected, dedicated participants who will work together for two and a half days in order to determine condensed results and directions for future research.

The conference is going to be held at Marbach Castle (Germany) from Wednesday, May 17 until Friday, May 19, 2017. Scholars attending the conference are eligible to apply for research grants after the conference related to the conference topic. These funds will be available only to young scholars attending the conference.


 Alyson Lavigne and Roger Chamberlain, Clinical Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership, have published "Teacher evaluation in Illinois: school leaders’ perceptions and practices" in Educational Assessment, Evaluation and Accountability. The entire article is accessible at

This fall, Roger Chamberlain also successfully passed each of the five modules required to meet the Performance Evaluation Reform Act (PERA) requirements to evaluate principals as a superintendent in the State of Illinois.


In September 2016, Margaret Policastro, Professor of Language and Literacy, and Becky McTague, Associate Professor of Elementary Education and Language and Literacy, presented at the annual meeting of the Illinois Reading Council, in Peoria, IL.

In addition, Margaret Policastro went to Illinois State University for the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) Improving Teacher Quality (ITQ) grant symposium. Dr. Policastro participated a writer’s workshop on Day One of the conference, and on Day Two, school partners at Our Lady of the Wayside in Arlington Heights presented an action research project. Later on the same day, Dr. Policastro presented their planned work for the current year, which is focused on implementing a New Balanced Literacy Teacher Leader professional development model.

Margaret Policastro also is continuing as an Illinois Literacy Association editorial board member for their journal, The Reading Teacher, and has had an article accepted about her work in Chicago area schools, "Discourse: The importance of talk in the balanced literacy classroom."  The article will appear in the winter edition of the Illinois Reading Council Journal, and is being developed into a new book that is under contract to Capstone Publishing, with an expected publication date of Fall 2018.


Last but not least, Tammy Oberg De La Garza, Associate Professor of Language and Literacy and the director of our new Dual Language Teacher Leadership Program, has been leading "powerful & thoughtful" discussions about race & establishing culturally responsive classrooms in Wood Dale School District 7 (the quote comes from John Corbett, District 7 Superintendent).


Ami Hicks, Adjunct Professor of Educational Leadership, will speak at the Illinois Educators Association state conference in Schaumburg on December 2.  Ami's presentation is entitled "A Passion for Teaching," and she will examine the Teacher Leader Model Standards, which recognize that the craft of the professional educator is built on enthusiasm, collegiality, self-reliance, reflection and professionalism in a variety of operational roles.  Participants will develop a plan for professional growth within their environment.​

Scholarships for ESL/Bilingual Endorsements

Scholarships and Awards from ITBE: Apply now!

Illinois TESOL-BE, a leading organization of ESL and Bilingual education teachers in Illinois, gives out a number of scholarships and awards every year.

Applications for 2017 are being accepted now! The application deadline is January 6, 2017.

The following scholarships will be given out at the annual ITBE Convention on Feb 25 and 26, 2017 in Naperville, IL:

1. Three graduate scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each for excellent graduate students in the field of TESOL/Bilingual education in need of financial assistance.

2. Two undergraduate scholarships in the amount of $500 each for excellent undergraduate students in the field of TESOL/Bilingual education/ESL endorsement in need of financial assistance.

3. Ten professional development scholarships for ESL or bilingual education teachers (part time or full time), and students in undergraduate or graduate TESOL and Bilingual education programs, who would like to attend the annual ITBE convention but are not able to receive funding from their institutions. This scholarship covers the cost of registration at the convention for Saturday, Feb 25 and a one year membership in ITBE.

The following award will be also given out at the convention:

4. One Elliot Judd outstanding teacher award in the amount of $500 for an excellent ESL/Bilingual Education teacher or teacher trainer who has demonstrated dedication to the field of TESOL and a commitment to the professional development of colleagues.
