Laura Messina To Speak At May 13 Honor Ceremony

I am very pleased to announce that the student speaker at the Franklin Honors Ceremony this year will be Laura Messina, an undergraduate student in the College of Education.

Laura is an Elementary Education major, and began her studies at RU in
Fall 2012 as a first yearstudent at the Schaumburg Campus.  In addition to
earning her licensure as an Illinois elementary teacher, Laura also completed
the coursework to earn endorsements in middle school education and ESL/bilingual education.  Her GPA over her career at Roosevelt is 3.92.

This spring, Laura completed her student teaching experience at Hoover Math and Science Academy in School District 54 under the supervision of Sharon Grant, Associate Professor Emerita in Elementary Education.  According to Dr. Grant, "Laura is one of the most dedicated, conscientious, and professional student teachers that it has been my pleasure to supervise in more than twenty years of mentoring future educators. She epitomizes the conceptual framework of the College of Education with the best interest of her students upper most in all she does in the classroom."

As a result of her exemplary efforts as a student teacher, Laura was nominated for and earned a Dean's Impact Award at the Student Teaching Honor Ceremony held on April 21, 2016.  Coincidentally, Laura's cooperating teacher at Hoover Math and Science Academy, Steven Kyle, earned a Great Mentor Teacher Award and Hoover was given a Great School Partner Award that was accepted by the principal, John Schmeltzer.

The Franklin Honor Society celebrates the achievements of undergraduate students who earned a cumulative Roosevelt GPA of 3.75 or higher. The induction ceremonies are held prior to the commencement ceremonies, so inductees get their gold honor cords to wear at the graduation ceremony.

The ceremony takes place this year on May 13, in Ganz Hall (AUD 7th Floor).  The ceremony will run from 8:00 AM to 8:45 AM. All current students and alumni are welcome to attend.

Please join me in congratulating Laura for this honor and her impressive achievements at RU!
