Roosevelt Alum Matt Whipple Earns Award

When Matt Whipple was growing up in Glenview, his career goal was to become a Chief Justice on the United States Supreme Court. Enamored by U.S. history and international relations, he wanted to make an impact by making decisions that moved the country forward.
But, somewhere along the road to becoming a lawyer, Whipple got hooked on educating the future generation. Since graduating from Northwestern University in 1988, Whipple has educated thousands of Glenbrook South (GBS) students in the area of international relations; helping bring open-minded students into the 21st century.
For his service to the betterment of students, the GBS community and the world alike, the GBS Parents Association honored Whipple with the 2016 Distinguished Teacher Award in May. It was announced during the Honors and Awards Assembly -- an assembly for juniors and seniors at South.
“I am fortunate to work in a community that respects education and offers opportunities to work with students who excel in their abilities to open their minds,” said Whipple. “One of the perks of the job is that I get to see a lot of extraordinary people do a lot of extraordinary things. Many GBS alums are seizing their dreams and it is rewarding to play a small role in helping them find that.”
Whipple earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Speech and History from Northwestern in 1988 and a Master’s degree from Roosevelt University in Educational Administration in 1996. He was awarded membership to the highly coveted Barkley Forum Gold Key Society, of debate coaches, in 1998.
