ESL/Bilingual Cohort for CPS Teachers - Starts Sept. 11

Washington HS
ESL/Bilingual
Cohort

Begins September 11, 2017

In response to high need, Chicago Public Schools and Roosevelt University are partnering to recruit CPS teachers to join a Fall 2017 cohort at Washington High School working toward ESL and Bilingual endorsements.

The 6 course program will consist of 1 online and 1 face-to-face course each semester:

Fall 2017 | Sept. – Dec. | READ 468 & READ 475
Spring 2018 | Jan. - April | READ 473 & READ 474
Summer 2018 | May - Aug. | READ 458 & READ 476
  • The first online course starts on Sept. 11 and ends on Dec. 10, 2017.
  • The online course will be taught by Tammy Oberg De La Garza, associate professor of language and literacy and author of Salsa Dancing in Gym Shoes: Exploring Cross-Cultural Missteps with Latinos in the Classroom.
  • Graduate credits related to the endorsements can be applied toward Roosevelt MA degrees in Reading, Teaching & Learning or Second Language Special Education.

NOTE: The Illinois State Board of Education requires 100 clinical hours in bilingual or ESL settings to earn both of the endorsements.

CPS teachers who join this cohort will have an opportunity to receive 50% tuition support from CPS’s Office of Language and Cultural Education.  This means that the total tuition charge for each course will only be $540. With this support, the total cost of the 6 course program per teacher is only $3,240.

By June 26, we will make a decision about the best approach for delivering the face-to-face classes at Washington High School in Fall 2017. Face-to-face courses will either be after school or on Saturdays at this address: 3535 East 114th St., Chicago, IL 60617.
